classical dance stage background

background Indian classical dance has a history of over three thousand years, with the genre’s origins in the Natyashastra, or the Indian tradition of ancient dance. Though there is no definite list of classical dances, there are a large number of them. Some sources recognize eight or more, including the classical bharatanatyam, kriti, gharana, kathak, and khyala. The Sangeet Natak Academy has listed seven, while the Indian Ministry of Culture has added two more – Chhau and Bharatiya – to the list. The genre is traditionally regional and varies by country.
