A bayou is a low-lying depression where water collects. It may be a marsh-like lake, or a slow-moving river. The bayous’ waters, dubbed the “sleeping waters,” are home to marsh birds, animals, and voodoo legends. They’re also a source of wildlife. For many years, these swamplands served as important transportation waterways before the railroads and the automobile were invented.
